Why Are Companies Transitioning To Plastic Pallets?

25 Jun 2018

More businesses are transitioning to plastic pallets, as they are experiencing for themselves the many benefits of doing so. Many companies are ditching wooden pallets and moving to plastic pallets for their added durability, easy maintenance, flexibility of use and reliability. Plastic pallets are extremely sturdy, impervious to weather conditions and can be used on many occasions, making them an extremely cost-effective option. Wooden pallets were the industry standard for many years, but the extra features that plastic pallets offer make them an increasingly popular choice.

Strong and Made to Last

Even the best wooden pallets may only last five years or so. Some of them only last one trip, and as they can be prone to splintering, this causes problems in the supply chain and some agents will not receive goods on damaged wooden pallets. Wooden pallets can often be quite brittle and easily broken.

Companies that are transitioning to plastic pallets find that a good-quality plastic pallet can deliver excellent service for up to a decade. Although plastic pallets may cost a little more initially, their life span means that moving to plastic pallets is an economical choice that will save companies money. In addition, plastic pallets are so easy to clean and are not affected by moisture. Pallets made of wood can rot and harbour harmful moulds and bacteria, whereas plastic pallets can be sterilised and are very hygienic. Replacing wooden pallets with plastic pallets is not only cost-effective but healthier too, as there is no chance of the goods being shipped being contaminated in any way by a rotting wooden pallet.

As plastic is impervious to bacteria or viruses, they are the perfect choice for shipping delicate goods such as pharmaceuticals, food or drink that need to arrive at their destination in pristine condition. Plastic pallets are also resistant to most chemicals, will not need to be treated for pests and will not be held back at borders while they are assessed to see whether they are carrying harmful diseases or infections.

Sustainability and Great Value

Wooden pallets can be repurposed, and plastic pallets can be recycled too. If a plastic pallet is damaged, it can be ground down into pellets which are then used to new pallets or any number of other plastic items. Plastic pallets are also light, and by using them energy use is reduced and resources conserved. Being long-lasting is also good for the environment.

If a business is shipping items within a closed loop system – where the pallet is likely to come back to you – then transitioning to plastic pallets makes perfect sense. With their durability, long life and low weight, replacing wooden pallets with plastic pallets makes the process easier and will reduce costs at the same time. Plastic pallets may cost a little more at the beginning, but they last a very long time. They can also be designed and customised to enhance the shipping process and provide extra protection for the goods being transported. Where hygiene is an issue, transitioning to plastic pallets is the only way forward.
